Reflection on Semiotics

This entire module opened and broadened my perspective towards signs and language. After the module, I look and observe things so differently, in a way, I never thought of before. Initially, the things and concepts seemed very complex and impractical but gradually it all started making sense as I was able to connect the dots. I am now much more aware, conscious and observant about my surroundings, objects, sounds. What impact any kind of signifier has on me.

Studying semiotics and its terminology was crucial for me to become a good designer so that I can communicate to my audience well. Any successful design is based on its impact on the audience, viewer, reader, and that impact is based on how well you can connect with them by establishing a bond or a story they might be concerned about.

Our very first assignment taught me how one signifier can hold innumerable meanings and connotations to a person based on their system or background or perspective. The meaning we make out from signs depends on how our mind wants it to take, depending upon our cultural convention and our system. Saussure's theories were complex but practical. The color interaction made it more evident how a set of contrasts invites interpretation and not its usage alone. Like colors hold cultural meanings depending upon their relationship with each other and its relationship with its context likewise language and signs make meaning according to their relationship with each other.

We see the use of semiotics in our everyday lives. We see the use of codes, langue, metaphors, and metonyms in advertisements, posters, films. One might not even realize it, as our mind very spontaneously comprehends what is being said.

This module has opened another realm for me to how to understand your audience better and how to convey what you mean effectively.
